Occupational Health
Occupational Health Department is a strictly confidential advisory service, independent of management, established to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of our employees. The service is based on the latest evidence and aims to ensure both our current and future workforce are physically and psychologically fit to undertake their role.
It also aims to ensure that the working environment does not adversely affect employee’s health. The service endeavours to deliver impartial occupational health advice to all employees of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
To achieve this, we have a team of highly qualified Occupational Health staff who consistently lead the service collectively and with compassion. This enables a model of continuous improvement to drive our services in order to maximise efficiency, effectiveness, capability and capacity.
The range of services we currently offer are:
- Advice on rehabilitation and redeployment
- Advice on managing health issues in the workplace
- Management of contamination injuries e.g. needle stick injury
- Access to physiotherapy for musculoskeletal problems
- Pre-placement health assessments
- Immunisation / vaccination programmes for protection at work
- Identification of workplace hazards
- Health surveillance for exposure to hazardous substances
- Advice on managing accidents / work related illness
- Advice on suitability for early retirement on the grounds of ill health
- Advice on disability issues
- Health and Safety advice
- Eye sight tests for display screen equipment users
- Healthy life style advice
- Advice and information on outside agencies who may be able to help further

Staff Recognition Award
The Health Board recognises and rewards staff achievements. Perfect attendance over a twelve-month period is acknowledged with a certificate and entry into a prize draw. Individuals or teams who have made an exceptional contribution to healthcare may be nominated for a number of awards in various categories. A panel of experts assesses the nominations. Awards range from training bursaries – to certificates of achievement.

NHS Pension (Superannuation Scheme)
Membership of the NHS Superannuation Scheme is available to all health service employees. The rate of contribution is six percent of gross basic pay. The facility to make additional voluntary contributions through the NHS Pension Scheme is also available to all employees.

Smoke Free Environment
The Health Board is committed to its “No Smoking” policy designed to provide a smoke-free environment for non-smokers whilst encouraging health promotion to patients, staff and visitors. Staff who wish to give up smoking are encouraged to visit the Occupational Health Service where help and advice is freely given.
Flexible Working Practices
Aneurin Bevan Health Board is committed to the implementation of flexible forms of working for staff. Flexible working opportunities include part-time working, term-time working, voluntary reduced hours and job sharing. The Health Board has a flexible approach to issues such as adoption leave, career breaks, and leave for domestic or personal reasons.

Corporate membership reduction is also available to staff in many health and leisure facilities. All Health Board restaurants provide a 10% discount to staff wearing their I.D. badge. Welsh Language / Sign Language
The Health Board actively promotes the Welsh Language. Training opportunities are available for staff wanting to learn Welsh. Sign language is also promoted and training readily available.
Education and Development
The Health Board has its own nationally accredited management training programmes. The selection of available courses provides a range of training events from outdoor development centres to formal in-house lectures. The management programmes are aimed at all levels of staff from supervisory grades to senior managers and clinicians. The range of programmes supports the trust’s commitment for the provision of a well-managed, customer focused service.
The Health Board also offers a wide range of training and development opportunities for professional and ancillary staff, including clinical training, NVQ training, IT training and health and safety training. A comprehensive programme of one-day personal development workshops provides ongoing development for staff who want to improve knowledge of a specific area without undertaking an extensive programme.
The Health Board has developed close working relationships with local colleges and universities and is happy to advise or support staff wanting to pursue higher academic or postgraduate qualifications.
Postgraduate medical centres are located at the three acute hospital sites which host multi-disciplinary training in a range of specialities as well as providing specific teaching for doctors in training.

Reservists Careers with ABUHB:
ABUHB is proud to support Reservists, Veterans and Cadet Adult Volunteers to combine their Armed Forces and civilian careers.
- Close relationships with a number of local Regiments and in particular the (203) Welsh Field Hospital and (104) Regiment Royal Artillery to support a number of staff to work in duel careers in the NHS and Reserves.
- ABUHB had fully adopted the All Wales Reservists Policy a copy of which can be found here.
- We are working with a range of partners to support Armed Forces leavers to establish civilian careers when they leave the Armed Forces.

Nevill Hall Crèche
Nevill Hall Crèche is a registered day care nursery which has been providing high quality childcare at Nevill Hall Hospital for 34 years.
Located in the grounds of Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny. Priority placements reserved for NHS staff. Places available for non-NHS staff.
Nevill Hall Crèche is a registered charity run for the benefit of its members, i.e. the children currently attending the crèche and as such is a not-for-profit organisation. An Annual General Meeting is held each year for the election of members of the Committee. The Person in Charge on a day to day basis is Elaine White.
We are a registered Day Nursery and a registered Education Provider and as such meet the requirements of the Care and Social Services Inspectorate for Wales and Local Education Authority. We are an English language setting that encourages the use of the Welsh language. Our CSSIW registration number is W15/00001062/0001. We are part of Wales PPA.
